History: Starting as a pigeon trainer in dime museums, and ending his career in show-business as a Punch and Judy man, Joseph Milana,
left a small but indelible mark on landscape of late 19th and early 20th Century sideshow. In addition to being a fireeater and magician,
The Mighty Ajax was one of the century's most visible Sword Swallowers— famous for his long run season after season at Coney Island's
Dreamland Circus Sideshow.
Ajax was born in 1886 in Washington. He performed in Vaudeville with Al Jolson and Eddy Cantor, and also appeared with Buffalo Bill's Circus in
Europe. Ajax claimed to have taught himself how to swallow swords. He died in 1958.
Thanks to Richard E. Milana, Ajax's son, who provided further information for the update of this page. |
